Dr. Shannon Bard

Co-Lead of the Climate Venture Studio

Specialization: Climate Solutions & Social Impact

Shannon Bard is the co-lead of the Climate Venture Studio stream with fellow Entrepreneur in Residence, Paul Needham. She has over 30  years experience in innovation and R&D in climate solutions, environmental sustainability,  ecosystem & human health.  Shannon was previously the global Director of Innovation for the environmental consulting firm Hemmera and parent engineering company Ausenco.  She developed and launched a global corporate Innovation Program for >2000 staff to undertake industrial-academic-government R&D collaborations to develop and commercialize new science and engineering services to solve sustainability issues. She oversaw a Board-directed innovation incubator to invest in applying new technologies and approaches, including AI, automation, data analytics, clean tech, VR/AR & digital solutions, biological and genomic tools to reduce the environmental footprint of industry activities. Formerly, Shannon was a professor of Environmental Science at Dalhousie University, Director of the Marine Ecotoxicology Laboratory and co-winner of the Senate Environmental Award. 


Karen Boodram

Specialization: Human Health/Biotech

Karen Boodram's 30-year+ career has focused on the commercialization of new medical technologies to improve patient health outcomes. In the Pharma industry, Karen managed the advancement of key drug products/franchises through the commercialization process, including regulatory, clinical development, marketing and reimbursement. In the financial industry as a Life Science analyst, Karen focused on helping public Life Science companies advance their medical technologies to commercialization or acquisition through the support of the equity markets. Karen has an MBA, BSc.Pharm. and, BSc. Bioch.

Ian Colotla

Specialization: Climate Solutions

Ian Colotla's career spans 25+ years leading and improving operations in industry and consulting. He started his career in industry and held senior engineering and management roles at Danfoss (industrial group) and Novo Nordisk (pharma) in Denmark, then moved to Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to serve executive teams and of multinational companies across multiple industries specializing in operations improvement (supply chain, manufacturing, R&D/innovation). As Managing Director & Partner, Ian led the Operations Practice in the Nordics and until 2020 when he relocated to Vancouver, he led the Manufacturing & Supply Chain topic for BCG in Asia Pacific. Ian holds a BASc in Mechanical Engineering from UBC, a PhD in Manufacturing Engineering from University of Cambridge and an MBA from University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Registered European Engineer (Eur Ing), and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) in the UK.


Tiffany Hamilton

Specialization: Market Strategy & Business Model Commercialization

Tiffany Hamilton led mobile initiatives at Subway Restaurants, launching their first nationwide mobile app across the U.S. and Canada to over 25,000 franchise locations. She was formerly a Client Partner at Blast Radius, a digital agency, driving new digital marketing initiatives. Previously, Tiffany lived in Germany for six years working at Bertelsmann, Europe’s largest media company, on new opportunities in disruptive media technologies in Europe and North America. She holds a Bachelor of Mathematics and Masters in Applied Science from the University of Waterloo.


Chang Han

Lead Entrepreneur in Residence

Specialization:  Biotech, International Trade, and IP Creation

Chang Han is an entrepreneur, consultant-investor, and professor, specializing in entrepreneurship, startup growth strategy and market entry.  He co-founded 3 currently operating businesses in biotech, international trade for sports performance beverages, and electric mountain bikes, and is also an investor and shareholder for several other startups in urban mining, CPG and tech. Chang provides consulting and advisory for several SME's, often acting as in-house counsel or Chief Legal Officer for incorporation of startups, and for IP, contracts, regulatory, and HR.  


Dr. Gabe Kalmar

Specialization: Human Health/Biotech

Gabe Kalmar has co-founded a number of companies, including Kinetek.  He was also with Genome BC for a decade in a number of executive roles, including operations, business development and commercialization.  Gabe continues to work with several companies and public-private partnerships as a management and operations consultant, and board member. He holds a PhD from Simon Fraser University in molecular virology. 


Paul Needham

Co-Lead of the Climate Venture Studio

Specialization: Climate Solutions & Social Impact

Paul Needham is a Fintech and Cleantech serial entrepreneur with over 19 years of experience as founder, CEO and board member, leading companies from inception to successful exits. Paul currently serves as board member and senior advisor to energy access enterprises, financing facilities and social impact investment funds that are accelerating the energy transition. Paul cofounded and led Simpa Networks, the leading rooftop solar leasing company in India. Simpa was acquired by ENGIE in November 2018. Paul is the co-lead of the Climate Venture Studio stream with fellow Entrepreneur in Residence, Shannon Bard. 


Fraser Pogue

Specialization: Software Development & Architecture and Product Development

Fraser Pogue is the founder of Fraser Instruments and co-founder of Popul8. He is an adjunct professor at UBC, teaching Entrepreneurship and helping students from ideation through to first revenue. Fraser studied computer science and obtained his MBA both from UBC.


Blair Simonite

Specialization: Leadership development & coaching, early stage venture creation

Blair Simonite has been helping entrepreneurs build technology ventures for longer than he’ll admit to. He has done the journey from early stage company to exit several times, as an insider, an advisor, and a board member. At UBC, Blair helps students, researchers, alumni and staff to turn their ideas into ventures, and to develop the entrepreneurial and leadership skills they will need to thrive and grow.  He is also a UBC adjunct professor, teaching practical entrepreneurship courses to the next generation of entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs.   
Blair has a BASc in electrical engineering and an MBA, and is a registered professional engineer in BC.

Michelle Sklar 

Head of Venture Growth Strategy

Specialization: Marketing & Communication Strategy

Michelle Sklar is a performance driven marketing and communications leader with over two decades of comprehensive achievements in digital marketing, PR, strategic partnerships, community management and numerous entrepreneurial endeavors. She has focused her professional career development on bringing ideas from inception to execution in the Emerging Technology, Digital Media, Events and Nonprofit industries. Her broad cross-functional expertise is in brand and digital asset management, content creation, B2B SaaS, team building, project management and analytics. She thrives in Startups and fast paced environments, where culture and vision match the desire to be transformative. When not working, Michelle can be found travelling, cooking great meals and enjoying live music. Michelle and her partner recently acquired a UVIN (wine making business) and are the new proprietors of the Wine Factory in New Westminster.


Francis Steiner

Commercialization Strategy

Specialization: Business development/Pilots/Sales, Market Strategy, and Customer Discovery

Francis Steiner is a specialist in building early stage companies from idea identification to team building through to business development and sales.  He has launched 4 companies with the last one exiting to Phillips. He has worked in the UK as a strategy consultant across multiple industries for PE firms. He has a BA from the University of Toronto and an MBA from London Business School.

Tom Urban

Specialization: AgricTech, Financing, and Sales & Marketing

Tom Urban is the Founder of Agribusiness Advisors and has worked in the agriculture and start-up world for 30 years. Agribusiness Advisors currently has 19 early-stage investments in its portfolio representing a broad cross-section of the Ag value chain. Tom received his undergraduate degree from Middlebury College and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.  

Michele Wallcraft

Specialization: Market Validation, Customer Discovery, and Sales Strategy

Michele Wallcraft is a passionate and creative sales driven professional with an extensive track record (+20 years) in direct sales, business development and integrated marketing for both startup and Fortune 500 technology companies. Michele is currently an Executive in Residence at entrepreneurship@UBC and loves mentoring, training and coaching sales teams.  She has a keen interest in new concepts, social impact, and chocolate and owns/operates a boutique shared workspace in Vancouver. 

Peter Wong

Specialization: Product Strategy, Sales, and Marketing

Peter Wong is the CEO of Riot Micro, a cellular IoT company developing wireless chipsets. A tech industry veteran, Peter has held senior management roles at PMC-Sierra/Microchip, LSI/Broadcom and HP. Peter continues to advise and support tech companies in Vancouver.
